The Sahuarita Ledger has served the Santa Cruz Valley since 1981, when founding editor Ramona Esquivel began publishing a weekly broadsheet from the rooms above the old feed store on La Cañada Drive — rooms the paper occupies to this day, and which still smell faintly, pleasantly, of alfalfa.
We cover the Valley the way we believe a local paper should: the council meetings nobody else will sit through, the festivals, the groves, the monsoon (when it deigns to arrive), and — through our nationally noted language desk — the words this community uses and occasionally fights about.
The Newsroom
Marguerite Ellery, language columnist, writes The Etymologist each Sunday. Her work on borderland pronunciation has been described by the Institute for Contact Linguistics as “indispensable” and by her own letters page as “a lot.”
Colleen Vasquez covers town government and has attended every public comment period on the Sahuarita Road roundabout, a streak she describes as “a choice I made once, long ago, that now makes itself.”
Dot Hagerty runs the Community desk and knows everyone. If she has not yet written about you, remain calm. She will.
